Across My Kitchen Door

Deborah Grabien

I see water on the windowpane
Hear it gurgling down the drain
Step outside and there's no rain I swear I feel it falling

It runs and courses down my cheek
If Time's a river, then love's a creek
Give me a voice so I can speak
Drown out the lost years calling

We're trapped inside a looking glass
Bloodless ghosts not made to last
Your memory leaves no shadow cast
Across my kitchen door.

So this is where the crossroads meet
A thousand roads, not one complete
Just endless searching for the seat
Where sleep and dreams surround me

Nothing comes from paying dues
But broken hearts and dirty blues
Just walk until these well-worn shoes
Dissolve to dust around me

We're trapped inside a looking glass
Bloodless ghosts not made to last
Your memory leaves no shadow cast
Across my kitchen door

Give me the breath to call your name
Give me the room to lift my hands
Give me the urn to fill with flame
I'll never get to know
Where all those shadows go

The clouds move on, the sky looks blue
Still hearing rain, and thunder too
And no one knows but me and you
The storm is all inside me

The rivers meet the sea at last
As calm as time, as smooth as glass
They carry dreams and lives long past
I let the water hide me.
We're trapped inside a looking glass
Bloodless ghosts not made to last
Your memory leaves no shadow cast
Across my kitchen door
