This Road

by Deborah Grabien

Memory is constant, these fragments of my life
Woven with the filaments of time
Pieces of my distant self, harmony and strife,
Choices made, both broken and sublime

Today I looked behind me, into history
Shadows in my heart obscure the source
I hear my footsteps echo, wait 'til I can see
Past and present as I walk this course.

I can't say where I have been
I can't share what I don't know
I keep moving anyway
Swimming in the overflow
There is only one thing I do know:
This road takes me where I need to go.

Here we are together, in the here and now
Here I am, caught in the now and then.
Struggling to keep the faith, promises and vows
Even though there's darkness at the end

Shadows form behind me, future's made of mist
Stagger blind along this cold highway
If memory is constant, then surely I've been kissed
By sunlight as I walked along the way.

I can't say where I have been
I can't share what I don't know
I keep moving anyway
Swimming in the overflow

I can't say where I have been
I can't share what I don't know
I keep moving anyway
Swimming in the overflow
There is only one thing I do know:
This road takes me where I need to go.
Where I need to go.
